Perry is she is Chicago native, born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she was an adult, for fear of the effects stress would be able to have on their daughter. Perry said that she was timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went into New York to search for television work landing small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent However, she was stricken by homelessness and brought her back to California which is where she discovered theatre jobs. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The character was assigned by audition despite the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
